Teja T.
Branch Manager
Formerly: Financial Wellness Consultant
Interview
What attracted you to Key?
I worked for a smaller bank before, but there was limited opportunity for career growth. Key’s many career paths appeal to me—I’m glad I joined!
What career development opportunities have you experienced so far?
The LEAP program is excellent! I participated in the Banker to Branch Manager program. I’m all about people and doing what’s best for them, and I was so excited to be given a clear path to leadership.
Also, Key has many internal networking groups that create opportunities for career growth. Employees who participate in the networking groups are genuinely interested in helping you make connections to help you grow and develop.
Describe a typical day in the life of a Financial Wellness Consultant (FWC).
We have morning meetings and review production numbers. Financial Wellness Consultants always have time set aside for assigned sales calls and training. They also have pre-set appointments throughout the day. Setting future meetings with clients and prospects is a big part of the routine. Some days they spend time collaborating with partners on complex client challenges and looking for new leads or opportunities to help clients.
How is this different from the Personal Banker role?
FWCs also assist with Teller transactions. As a Branch Manager, I own a lot of operational tasks, but sometimes FWCs help the Manager too. Financial Wellness consultants are involved in all aspects of branch operations. It’s a very dynamic role.
What did you like most about the Financial Wellness Consultant role?
Making a difference in clients’ lives. In that role, I had so many opportunities to enhance the clients’ relationship with Key and contribute to their client experience. Sometimes I was able to make a difference in a client’s financial situation. For example, I used my partnerships at Key to help a client’s granddaughter refinance her mortgage and save thousands of dollars throughout the loan. By asking questions and providing guidance, opportunities are frequently uncovered.
How would you describe Key’s culture?
Employees feel like they can be themselves. We don’t have to be a certain way. We are all working hard to meet our goals and optimize interactions with clients—uniquely.
Also, my leaders have set me up with mentors. From day one, I had a mentor who answered my questions and shared advice. At this point, I’ve had a string of great mentors who helped prepare me for the Branch Manager role. We do monthly coaching sessions, and I’m empowered to guide the focus of those discussions.
What type of employee thrives in the Financial Wellness Consultant role?
Willingness to work hard and be a self-starter is critical. You’ll need to push yourself to be successful. The roadmap is provided to you, and leads are assigned to you, but Financial Wellness Consultants need to hold themselves accountable for going beyond those basics.
Being social and enjoying talking to people all day is central to this role. Someone who embraces teamwork will also be more successful.
Key is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer.
