Todd J. Vasos
Todd Vasos currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dollar General Corporation, which is ranked #112 on the Fortune 500 list and has been included in the S&P 500 since November 2012. Vasos’s engaged and thoughtful leadership has supported the company’s growth from approximately 8,400 stores and $10.5 billion in sales since joining the company to more than 17,000 stores today and $33.7 billion in sales in FY 2020.*
As CEO, Vasos leads more than 157,000 employees, 17,000 retail locations and more than 25 dry and cold storage distribution facilities, all while remaining deeply committed to the company’s mission of Serving Others. Passionately dedicated to the company, the communities it serves and through the work of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation that supports literacy and education, Vasos’s significant influence and impact on Dollar General is undoubtedly one of the company’s secret sauces for success.
As a leader, Vasos’s diligence to keep consistent and constant focus on best meeting its customers’ needs continually encourages and motivates the entire Dollar General team to do the same. Keeping a pulse on the heartbeat of the company, he regularly visits stores and distribution centers to talk to employees on how he can best support their roles within the company and support their career growth and development. His navigation of a rapidly-changing retail environment and ability to make insightful decisions to help further the company’s longevity and sustainable growth opportunities while simultaneously staying true to its more than 80-year-old culture of serving a wide range of customers is a true testament to his leadership and personal dedication to Dollar General.
Prior to his current CEO role, Vasos served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, responsible for store operations, supply chain and merchandising. He joined Dollar General in 2008 as its executive vice president, division president and chief merchandising officer, tasked with overseeing merchandising, marketing and global sourcing.
Previously, Vasos served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer at Longs Drugs, where he was responsible for all pharmacy and front-end marketing, merchandising, procurement, supply chain, advertising, store development, store layout, space allocation and the operation of three distribution centers. He also served as Longs’ senior vice president and chief merchandising officer for seven years. In that role, he spearheaded the company’s successful private brand program, centralized key marketing and merchandising functions, significantly reduced inventory and developed and launched the company’s “store within a store” concepts.
Vasos also has served in leadership positions at Eckerd Drug Corp. and Phar-Mor Food and Drug Inc. Throughout his career, Vasos has relocated five times, seeking career development opportunities and advancements.
Vasos earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Western Carolina University in 1983. He was named 2010 Merchant of the Year by Mass Market Retailers (MMR) magazine and currently serves on the board of directors for Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA).
Originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, Vasos graduated from Hoggard High School in Wilmington and is the son of the late Tom and Renetta Vasos. He currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife, Sandy. He has four daughters, one stepson and eight grandchildren.
