Cain Brothers Experience
Joe Mulligan is a Managing Director focused on public finance transactions for post-acute care and senior living clients. Joe joined Cain Brothers in 2008 and has more than 30 years’ investment banking experience. He has raised more than $3 billion of capital for nonprofit, private, and public health care companies within the acute, post-acute, behavioral health, and human service provider sectors in 32 states. Joe’s notable recent transactions include the $51 million taxable and tax-exempt financing for Three Pillars Senior Living Communities (WI), $73 million expansion and refinancing for WhiteStone (NC), and $42 million expansion and refinancing for The Cedars (ME). Joe is passionate about payment and delivery reform in senior care and is actively completing the firm’s second financing for an assisted living Medicaid waiver project, a 120-unit facility in Washington D.C. funded with tax credit equity and an FHA 232 loan. Joe is also working on the funding for an innovative campus master plan that incorporates workforce housing and intergenerational care into a new senior living campus to help address the industry workforce crisis.
Prior Experience
Before joining Cain Brothers, Joe was an investment banker at A.G. Edwards for 17 years. He managed their senior living finance practice nationally for over ten years and was responsible for establishing that firm’s senior living finance new business origination, credit underwriting, capital commitment, and surveillance procedures; he also co-chaired the firm’s derivatives committee.
Education
Joe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Economics and an MBA from Saint Louis University.
