5 Easy Ways to Save on Water Bill Charges

Are you looking for ways to cut utility costs? If so, it may be time to give your water usage a second look to find ways to save on water bill charges. Each person in a household uses between 80 to 100 gallons of water per day, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The average water bill each month cost $70.39 for a family of four using 100 gallons of water per person daily, according to Circle of Blue. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to save on water bill charges. Here are five tips to get started.

1. Fix Toilet Leaks

That leaky toilet isn't just annoying, it's costing you money as water drips away. The EPA reports that a typical toilet leak can use up to 200 gallons of water – a day! Fix that leak now and save money in the long run. Other water leaks to be aware of and catch early include roof leaks and pipe leaks. Don't forget to regularly check under your kitchen sink for any dripping.

2. Switch to Low-Flow Shower Heads

Switch out your old shower head for a new, low-flow head that uses less money to save on your water bill. The Department of Energy says the cost of a low-flow shower head ranges from $10 to $20, and installing one can equal water savings of up to 60 percent.

3. Use a Refillable Water Bottle

Make the switch from bottled water to a refillable water bottle. This simple swap protects the environment and reduces the number of empty plastic bottles cluttering up landfill sites. It also cuts down on weekly expenses. Statistic Brain reports that an average person consumes 167 bottles of water a year at a cost of $1.45 per bottle. So switching to a reusable water bottle could save you more than $200 annually.

4. Fill Up Your Dishwasher

If you have a dishwasher, fill it up before running it to save money by washing fewer loads. Not only does this save on your water bill, it uses less electricity, lowering your electricity bill. According to the California Energy Commission, setting your dishwasher on its air-dry mode uses less energy than a heat-dry setting. Simple changes like these can save you more money than you think.

5. Know How Much Water You Use

If you're one of those people who lets the water run while you brush your teeth, your money is going down the drain. By turning the water off when brushing your teeth each morning and evening, you could save more than 200 gallons of water annually, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). While baths typically use up to 70 gallons of water, showers only use between 10-25 gallons, according to the EPA. Stick to showers less than five minutes long. To see exactly how much water you are using on a regular basis – and if all of your efforts are working – be sure to regularly check your water bills.

Make these easy adjustments to save on water bill charges starting today. And to save even more on water in the future, start a savings account that will allow you to eventually install a low-flush toilet and other updated, more efficient appliances.
